A parador (“stopping place or rest area”) is a staple of the Spanish countryside, when old castles and convents were transformed into hostelries for weary knights and travelers.

During the end of the middle ages, ancient castles and convents were used as places of rest for knights and respectable travelers. As a payment for their lodging, it was customary for guests to leave an article behind, such as a sculpture, sword or painting. These items were then used to adorn the walls of the inn. At the start of the 20th century, these establishments were officially recognized as hotels and now form a chain boasting 80 renovated Spanish monuments.

Dutch master builder Jan Schans arrived in Costa Rica and fell in love with the country and its people, deciding it was the ideal spot to build his own eclectic parador, featuring European refinement with a warm tropical touch. He could see there was a need for a luxury resort in Manuel Antonio, and it wasn´t long before him and his family endeavored on bringing his vision into fruition. The Schans family opened their doors in 1995 as a full-service resort with 57 rooms, and expanded to 130 rooms in the year 2008. The modern version of Parador offers more luxury than the paradores of yore, but maintains its character, accentuated by a private collection of genuine European artefacts.
